Supporting your sexual well-being naturally

When people talk about sex, it’s usually with the assumption that everyone wants it all the time. There’s this notion that we’re all just waiting for the moment to get home, tear each other’s clothes off and ravage our partners.

Sex, of course, can be great. But for many women, the idea of sex can be a bit… meh. In fact, as many as 40% of all women have low libido or a complete disinterest in sex. It doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. Your sex drive - or lack thereof - can be rooted in lots of different causes. Things like testosterone levels, imbalances in your diet, inflammation, your type of (hormonal) birth control or even stress levels can impact your sex drive. These are common problems but we often don’t talk about our libido very much, especially if it’s non-existent. In a culture that makes sex seem like it’s all anyone wants, it can feel really isolating if you’re not all that interested in sex. But sex is important for connection and intimacy. A low sex drive can cause issues with your relationship and make you feel disconnected from your partner.

But don’t worry! We can help you!

In this post, we’ll tell you how to boost your sex drive naturally. We’ll help you figure out the root cause and give you some practical tips on how to restore your lost libido.

Real Talk

First things first. All the natural remedies in the world won’t do much good if the reason for your low sex drive is due to miscommunication with your partner. Time for some real talk, ladies. Be open and honest with your partner about your feelings and try talking about the things that make you feel good. Do you need more foreplay? Maybe you want to incorporate some props like a vibrator into your sex life. Or maybe a little role play? Maybe you could both visit a sex shop together and pick something out together. Talking about sex can feel awkward, but feeling close and connected can also increase your pleasure. Try it. It can’t hurt!

Ask yourself "what type of sex is something I can say 'yes' to". This might be a very enlightening way to think and talk about it. And who's to say a good talk about sex can't be some way of foreplay itself.

Think About Quitting the Pill

First of all, we just want to say that the pill is not bad. For many women, it can be the right choice. However, for many women, the side effects of the pill can negatively impact their lives so returning to a natural cycle - even if a baby is not on the agenda - can be a good idea. One of the more well documented side effects of the hormonal birth control pill is that it crashes women’s sex drive. So, if you’re currently feeling a bit lukewarm about sex and you’re on the pill, consider another form of birth control. It could help you get that libido back fast!

We would encourage you to read our post about the side effects of birth control. And if you’ve decided that quitting the pill is right for you, here’s a handy guide on how to get your natural cycle back on track

Make sure you get all the nutritions to support your health

Feeling sexy, and boost your libido, is very much connected with feeling healthy. That's why it's important that you get all the nutritions your body need. Make sure you have enough vitamins and minerals in your system.

Give Yourself Some Love

The way you feel about your body impacts how you feel about sex. Try to find ways to boost your self confidence. Consider buying yourself some new underwear that you feel good in or indulge in some self care like a manicure/pedicure, new haircut or blow out. When we look good, we feel good. We all have parts of our body that we wish were a bit different, but try to keep in mind that you are far more aware (and critical!) of them than your partner or anyone else. Try to find ways to boost your self image and remember: confidence is sexy.

Reduce Stress

When you’re stressed, your sex drive takes a hit. It’s really easy to simply say, well, reduce your stress! With the demands of life, it’s a lot harder to do in reality. But the fact is, women are a lot more susceptible to the effects of stress on their sex drive so it’s important to be conscious of stress and actively do things to reduce it. This could be carving out time for yourself for some alone time, or attending a stress-reducing yoga class. You could also try deep breathing before bed or even a regular meditation practice. Everyone will be different so try to find something that works with you and your schedule.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep really underpins everything from a wellbeing perspective. If your sleep is short, disrupted or you suffer from insomnia, it can make everything feel difficult, especially sex. When you’re well rested, things just seem to click and most women report a significant jump in sex drive when they are getting enough quality Zzzs at night. If you can’t get good quality sleep at night (Because you have a newborn at home, or a partner who snores!) try to incorporate naps. A 20 minute power nap can do wonders. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, make sure you wind down properly before bed and avoid screens an hour before bedtime.

And if you still feel you are not getting to sleep well, increase your magnesium intake. Magnesium helps reduce fatigue and tiredness.

Remember: everyone is different and there’s no one-size fits all approach when it comes to increasing your sex drive. Make sure your body gets the right nutrition, and think about whether the pill might be impacting your sex drive and most importantly, talk to your partner.
